First Builders Association Estimating Competition Winners Named
The Builders recently named the winners of its first construction project estimating competition, held for civil engineering and civil and construction engineering technology students at Youngstown State University.
The all-day event pitted teams of students against each other. A faculty advisor and a mentor from the regional construction community worked with teams for a few weeks prior to the event, but on the day of the competition, the teams were on their own to create an actual bid for a construction project.
Winning the competition were Rob Sullivan, Mike Lyda, Eric Sofranko, and Ethan Taylor. The team’s mentors were Dave Wendell, Paul Sweeney and Paul Johnson of Adolph Johnson & Son Construction Company. The winning students each received a $50 gift certificate for the YSU bookstore.
“We believe this competition met its primary goal of providing real-world experience to future members of the regional construction industry,” said The Builders’ Kevin Reilly, executive vice president. “All of the bids were excellent and well thought out. The winning team did an outstanding job and they are to be commended on their hard work.”
About the Competition
The featured project was an actual job that was awarded to – and built by – a member of The Builders. Each team worked from a set of plans and specifications, a partially complete bid worksheet, labor costs, and unit costs. Teams were charged with writing a complete estimate and then defend their material in a 20-minute discussion with judges, who were Builders members and area construction executives.
This is the first year for the competition, an idea that was suggested by YSU students. Each year, The Builders awards scholarships to YSU students who are studying for a career in construction. At last year’s award ceremony, scholarship recipients expressed a desire to work on an actual building project. Reilly said the Builders plans to make this event an annual occurrence.
Team mentors were Craig Fauvie of Jack Gibson Construction, Frank Vendemia of Vendrick Construction, Geoff and Gale Measel of GEM Building Contractors, and Dave Wendell, Paul Sweeney and Paul Johnson of Adolph Johnson & Son.
Judges were Joe K. DeSalvo of DeSalvo Construction Company, Ed Van Dusen of Van Dusen Construction Company, Dan Terreri of Terreri Construction, and Joe Makosky, AIA, of JSM Enterprises.
