Local Students Get Up-Close View of Iron Worker Profession

The Builders Association of Eastern Ohio and Western PA teamed with members of the Iron Workers Youngstown Local 207 to host an educational Open House at the Iron Worker Training Center recently. Joining Poland High School students were men and women from the Mahoning and Trumbull counties' Career and Technical Centers. During the day-long event, iron worker apprentices and instructors Jim Caruso, Matt Sargent, and Ray Moore demonstrated rigging, column splicing, column climbing, and welding. Mock-ups of bridges and metal buildings were also on display, and work surrounding those types of projects were demonstrated and discussed. Students were able to try welding and column climbing as a hands-on activity.
“We wanted to give these young men and women an in-depth look at our region’s iron worker capabilities, and explain the various career opportunities that exist by being a union iron worker,” said Kevin Reilly, Executive Vice-President of The Builders.
