May Membership Meeting Offers Ample Development Opportunities
On a recent Wednesday in May, area construction professionals were given a variety of professional development opportunities as a benefit of their membership in the Builders Association of Eastern Ohio and Western PA.
Earlier in the day, and as part of OSHA’s annual Safety Stand-Down activities, Builders member Boak and Sons, Inc. hosted staff from the Youngstown BWC’s Division of Safety & Hygiene and safety consultants from Rettew Associates, Inc. to review and demonstrate safety issues. Learn more about that event.
Over at the Youngstown Lake Club later that day, David Costantino and Mary Betts from the Youngstown BWC Division of Safety & Hygiene office reported to Builders members details about the regional Safety-Stand-Down and about the scope of services provided by the Youngstown BWC office.
The BWC services include loss prevention services and safety consulting helps with implementing drug free workplace programs, and offers topic-specific safety publications and over 90 safety education courses. Their services are funded by 1% of BWC premiums and are provided at no cost to the requestor. Their coverage area includes 12,000 construction and general industry employers in Ashtabula, Trumbull, Mahoning, Columbiana and half of Portage counties.
David and Mary recommend contractors becoming members of a regional Safety Council to take advantage of up to 4% BWC premium discounts for Council members. They also suggest having their office review safety incentive grant applications prior to submission. David and Mary distributed a folder containing information about the annual stand-down, a contact list for their office broken down by geographic area of responsibility and services provided, and a copy of the PowerPoint slides from their presentation.
Following the BWC presentation, the Builders held its membership meeting. It was highlighted with a presentation by Anthony Cafaro Jr., Co-President of the Cafaro Company regarding the 3.3 million square-feet Eastwood Mall complex. He spoke of the major renovation cycle of every 10 years at the mall, recent major new construction projects, including the new Cafaro corporate offices at the mall, and their plans for development of property adjacent to the mall complex in the future.
Mr. Cafaro, Jr. said the main consideration for the Eastwood Mall construction group when considering which contractor to hire for a project is that are they local. Mr. Cafaro Jr. suggested the members contact his Director of Construction, Rick Klinehamer (who was also in attendance), to get on the Eastwood Mall approved bidders list if they aren’t already. Builders member DeSalvo Construction Company, Inc., was one of the contractors involved in the new corporate office project.
Information about the future development, Enterprise Park @ Eastwood, includes:
- 100-acre site with 80 developable
- Located in Howland Twp., but bordering with Warren and Niles
- Campus-type setting projected to include educational, medical, assisted living, light manufacturing and specific retail with medical being the main driver
- Proximity to major highways, Youngstown airport and local population base are strong selling points
- Currently performing initial wetland studies and geotechnical investigation.
- Eastwood Field has been there 20 years. Cafaro Company is currently negotiating a new 10-year lease
- Every utility coming in to the mall had to be relocated to accommodate the new hotel and corporate office projects
