Members Learn About Lordstown Energy Center Project Plans

Topping it’s attendance from its first meeting, about 60 members of the Builders attended the May membership meeting at the Lake Club to get updates about Association news and activities, contract negotiations, and to hear a presentation by Kokosing Industrial.

Assistant Vice-President Ken Gonya, Project Manager Mel Lind and Site Manager Jeff Hartman joined Tom Muraskie, Senior Vice President of Kokosing, to discuss the Lordstown Energy Center, which Kokosing is building for Siemens.

Kokosing is a family-owned business that’s operated for about 65 years. The company has a strong regional presence in the Midwest area, with about $350 million in equipment resources.

The Lordstown Energy plant will be an 800-megawatt natural gas fired 2 x 1 configuration combined-cycle power plant. Construction started in April is expected to conclude in February 2018. Work on the project will be performed under a Project Labor Agreement and drug and alcohol screening will be required for all employees. Total craft manpower on the project is expected to peak at 550 workers during the months of April and May 2017.

Components of the project include gas and steam turbine installations, a heat recovery steam generator, pipe racks, a steam turbine building and an administration building. The project is expected to host about 23,000 yards of concrete.

Although the Lordstown Energy project is still in the early stages, a 24/7 safety policy is already in place. To work at the site, employees must have a minimum of OSHA 10-Hour training certification. Project foremen must also have OSHA 30-Hour credentials. Kokosing has also adopted a policy from Siemens called “Zero Harm Culture.”

“Zero Harm Culture means how employees come in to work in the morning is how they are expected to go home at night,” said Project Manager Mel Lind.

Lind also said that all contractors working on the project are subject to a pre-qualification process. Builders Association members wanting to get on the pre-qualification list should send him their contact information.
