THE BUILDERS Names YSU Student Winners of the 2011 Construction Estimating Competition

Six students from Youngstown State University combined recently to win the 2011 Construction Estimating Competition, presented by The Builders Association of Eastern Ohio and Western PA. Teams of students in the civil and construction engineering, and civil and construction engineering technology programs competed to deliver a real-world estimate on an actual project - the renovation of YSU's Tod Hall - under deadline and changing specification scenarios.

Winning the event was the team of Senior Tony McCoy, Juniors Steve Opperman, Frank Pulice, John Sweeney, and Majdy Salman, and Sophomore Zach Miles. Mentoring the students prior to competition day was YSU graduate Craig Fauvie, now vice-president of construction for Builders member Jack Gibson Construction Company. Once the competition began, however, students were on their own, without even the use of computers or cell phones. Prior to competition day, neither students nor mentors were told of the project that would be used.

"We see this contest as an opportunity to help better train and educate our region's future contractors, the potential estimators for some of our members as they graduate from the program," said Kevin Reilly, Executive Vice-President of The Builders.

Tod Hall was recently renovated by Builders member DeSalvo Construction. Each team received a set of plans and specifications, a partially complete bid worksheet, labor costs, and unit costs. Teams were required to present a written, complete estimate, including take-offs, pricing, quote sheets, and more. Teams then defended their bid in an oral examination by a panel of judges consisting of Builders members and construction executives.

"Our goal is to help the students gain real world experience," said Reilly.

Additional mentors were Jim Bayer of DeSalvo Construction Company, Dave Wendell and Paul Johnson of Adolph Johnson & Son, and Professor Joe Sanson of Youngstown State University. Judging the bids was Ed Van Dusen of Van Dusen Construction Company, Daniel Terreri of Daniel A. Terreri & Sons, Inc., and Kevin Reilly. Professor Carol Lamb of YSU, who administrates the civil engineering program, coordinated the event for YSU.

This is the second competition presented by The Builders for YSU. Winning team members of both years are listed on a perennial plaque that was presented to YSU officials for display at the school.
