The Builders Announces 2012 YSU Estimating Competition Winners

20 talented students from Youngstown State University's Civil and Construction Engineering Technology program spent the day recently determining just how much it would cost to build an addition on to a local car dealership, carefully calculating everything from materials to labor.†The winning team - a group of sophomores and a senior - presented comprehensive numbers and solid arguments to support their bid and were rewarded by being crowned the 2012 champions of the annual Builders Association Estimating Competition.†

The all-day event pits three teams of students against each other. A faculty advisor and a mentor from the regional construction community prepared the teams in pre-competition training sessions. However, on "game day," students were sequestered and on their own to create their teamís bid.

The annual event began in 2009, and is student-driven. Each year, The Builders awards scholarships to YSU students who are studying for a career in construction. At the 2008 award ceremony, scholarship recipients expressed a desire to work on an actual building project, and The Builders created the event in response to the request.†
