Bustin’ Clays hits the mark to support students entering the skilled trades

With shotguns in hand and the trades in mind, members of The Builders Association gathered for the second annual Bustin’ Clays with The Builders.

The sold-out event was held on November 5 the Lawrence County Sportsmen’s Association to raise money for pre-apprenticeship programs, scholarships and education expenses.

Industry professionals from across the region broke into foursomes for friendly competition, food, raffles and camaraderie. Ultimately, the goal is to help students step into skilled trades careers with the resources they need to succeed.

“It’s about bringing our members together for a good cause and helps move the needle on our workforce efforts,” said Kevin Reilly, executive vice president, The Builders. “We’re making sure students have a clear path into the trades with the right tools, boots and other supplies.”

At least 800 high school students in 21 districts across the area currently participate in pre-apprenticeship programs. They build core trade skills and connect students with career opportunities after graduation.

Participants enjoyed a hot lunch before prizes were awarded. Congratulations to the following winners:

High overall shooter (score 89): Bill Davis, Diamond Steel
8th place team: I.C. Electric
16th place team: DeSalvo Construction

Beretta A400 Excel: John Walczak, Lencyk Masonry
Yeti cooler: Mark Kasula, UCI (donated by HBK)

In addition to the competition, sponsors play a major role in making the day a success:

Shell sponsor: Bodine and Company
Lunch sponsors: Ironworkers Local 207 and FNB Wealth Management
Raffle and impossible shot: Power Tool & Supply
Premium sponsors: FTIOR, Painters DC-6, A1 Industrial Painting, Masonry Materials Plus and Heidelberg Materials

Reilly emphasized that Bustin’ Clays is more than just a fundraiser. It’s a reflection of the industry’s shared commitment to strengthening the construction workforce.

“When members show up for something like this, it tells students, parents and schools that we’re serious about investing in the next generation,” he said. “The money we raise goes toward real needs, and every bit of it makes a difference.”
