Five YSU students awarded scholarship from The Builders
Scholarship program’s 37th year tops $100,000 mark in overall giving
Five future members of the region’s construction industry are getting a bump for college expenses, thanks to a long-standing program of The Builders Association of Eastern Ohio and Western Pennsylvania.
Each year, The Builders awards scholarships as a highlight to its annual meeting, held this year on December 3rd. Scholarships are presented to Youngstown State University students who are excelling in the school’s Civil and Construction Engineering Technology program.
This, the 37th consecutive year of supporting the area’s future construction industry members, marks a milestone in that it tops the $100,000 mark in giving. Since 1971, $101,210 has been awarded by The Builders.
“In these tough times, it is more important than ever to continue fueling the economy of our region with. We believe this program helps prepare tomorrow’s construction leaders to be expert stewards of the future of this industry,” said Kevin Reilly, Executive Vice President of The Builders.
Those students awarded scholarships this year are:
- Mark Wooten — Mark is a 2006 Liberty High School graduate and is in his third year at Youngstown State University in the Civil & Construction Engineering Technology program. Mark currently works for ACA Engineering. Mark plans to pursue a career in construction engineering upon graduation and would like to start his own construction company. Mark resides in Girard, Ohio.
- Cory Cercone — Cory is a 2007 Austintown Fitch graduate and is in his second year at Youngstown State University in the Civil & Construction Engineering Technology program. Cory plans to pursue a career in construction engineering upon graduation. Cory resides in Youngstown, Ohio.
- Takesha Hopkins — Takesha is a 1997 J.F. Kennedy graduate and is in her second year at Youngstown State University in the Civil & Construction Engineering Technology program. Takesha plans to pursue a career in civil engineering upon graduation. Takesha resides in Niles, Ohio.
- Jeron Hollis — Jeron is a 2006 South High graduate and is in his second year at Youngstown State University in the Civil & Construction Engineering Technology program. Jeron plans to pursue a career in civil engineering upon graduation. During the school year Jeron resides on campus, when not in school Jeron resides in Cleveland, Ohio.
- Chris Tofilski — Chris is a 2007 Western Reserve graduate and is in his second year at Youngstown State University in the Civil & Construction Engineering Technology program. Chris plans to pursue a career in construction engineering upon graduation. Chris resides in Berlin Center, Ohio.
